In recent decades, political discourse has gained increasing importance as a tool for legitimization and consensus-building. Within this framework, the linguistic analysis of political texts has proven to be a valuable key to understanding the relationship between leaders’ rhetorical choices and the socio-political contexts in which they operate. This research focuses on the case of Pedro Sánchez, President of the Spanish Government since 2018, and examines the evolution of his discursive strategies during a period deeply marked by crises and transformations: from the motion of no confidence that brought him to power, to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the gradual consolidation of his government alongside the emergence of new political actors. The research is based on the analysis of three corpora, comprising a total of 30 speeches delivered by Sánchez at three distinct stages: the beginning of his term (2018–2019), the pandemic phase (2020), and the post-pandemic period (2021–2024). The approach adopted is mixed, combining qualitative and quantitative methods, with particular attention paid to the pragmatic and rhetorical dimensions of the discourse. Through the analysis of personal pronouns, attack and defense strategies, and techniques of self-legitimation, the study seeks to understand how the President has constructed and redefined his political image over time. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of context. Textual data is consistently examined in relation to the political and social events that shaped the period under investigation, with the aim of showing how discursive choices are adapted to different communicative environments. The results highlight both a strong coherence in the President’s overall communicative strategy and a remarkable capacity to adapt to diverse situations. This research thus aims to contribute to a better understanding of contemporary political language, offering insight into the communicative dynamics within an evolving European context. In the final section, the findings from the three corpora are compared and a reflection is offered on the use of language as a strategic tool in power management and consensus construction.

Abstract
In the final section, the findings from the three corpora are compared and a reflection is offered on the use of language as a strategic tool in power management and consensus construction.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
