This thesis explores the relationship between ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) factors and bank credit, focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Italy and Europe. After analyzing the structural features of SMEs and their financing challenges, it examines the international regulatory framework, ESG rating methodologies, and the ways in which banks integrate these criteria into credit policies. The research highlights that strong ESG performance can improve financing conditions, reduce perceived risk for lenders, and create competitive advantages, while less structured SMEs face obstacles such as costs, regulatory complexity, and limited expertise. Empirical evidence, case studies, and institutional reports confirm that sustainability has become a strategic driver of resilience and growth, and is set to become a structural component in credit risk assessment.

Abstract
This thesis explores the relationship between ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) factors and bank credit, focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Italy and Europe. The research highlights that strong ESG performance can improve financing conditions, reduce perceived risk for lenders, and create competitive advantages, while less structured SMEs face obstacles such as costs, regulatory complexity, and limited expertise.
