This thesis aims to analyze the characteristics, methods, and research themes of Italian exploratory trips to Siberia, comparing the works of nineteenth-century and contemporary Italian travelers. Through an approach based on historical research and documentary analysis, the aim is to delve deeper into the Italian context of 19th-century and contemporary exploration voyages, starting with the analysis of 19th-century travel diaries of Italian explorers in Siberia and ending with the analysis of the works of contemporary Italian researchers in Siberia. The thesis is divided into four chapters: the first summarizes the Italian context of 19th-century exploration voyages, focusing on what was known about Siberia. The second chapter is dedicated to a specific analysis of the travel diaries of the Italian explorers Stéphen Sommier (a Florentine botanist and anthropologist) and the Milanese Count Luchino Dal Verme (Sergeant Major of the Italian Army and aide-de-camp to the Duke of Genoa, Thomas of Savoy), who traveled to Siberia in 1880. The third chapter describes the economic, social, and demographic changes and developments that occurred in Siberia between the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Finally, the fourth chapter analyzes the works of contemporary Italian explorers in Siberia, examining their methods, timing, and research themes. The thesis is accompanied by a selection of images and maps drawn from the sources analyzed for the historical research. The thesis aims, on the one hand, to highlight the almost forgotten exploits of 19th-century Italian explorers who ventured into uncharted territories for the sake of knowledge, and, on the other, to open new research perspectives in Siberia, especially from an anthropological and ethnographic perspective.
