What if...? L’Immaginario Distopico della Serie TV "Black Mirror"

This thesis analyses some episodes of the British television series Black Mirror (2011–) and the tensions that characterise the relationship between humans and technology in the Digital Age. In this age, technology becomes increasingly pervasive and radically transforms the Western contemporary society. This series is a Sci- Fi genre but includes horror elements, it also combines satire, media criticism, and dystopian narrative. Black Mirror provides a self-reflective lens through which examine the ethical, social and psychological consequences that may come from technological development. In this context, the series also considers perspectives from transhumanism and posthumanism, these theories explore limits and potential of the human beings, thereby redefining its identity and nature.This analysis focuses on the narrative and cinematographic elements such as the characters, settings, soundtracks, key scenes, and the hidden references (Easter Eggs) that establish connections among independent stories. In the selected episodes, this study also examines how, through possible futuristic scenarios, Black Mirror blurs the boundaries between dichotomies such as: utopia and dystopia, reality and fiction, freedom and control, connection and isolation, life and death, the temporary and the eternal, the present and the future. Through dystopia and these combinations, the series evokes in the audience a sense of anxiety and disorientation, as well as curiosity and empathetic connection with the characters. In this way, the series not only entertains but also encourages self-critical thoughts about the role of technology in the real everyday life and on the ethical consequences of scientific and digital development.

La tesi analizza alcuni episodi della serie televisiva britannica Black Mirror (2011-) esplorando le tensioni che caratterizzano il rapporto tra uomo e tecnologia nell’epoca della digitalizzazione. La nostra è un’era in cui la pervasività tecnologica sta trasformando profondamente la società contemporanea occidentale. Questa serie di genere fantascientifico ma ricca di contaminazioni horror, combina satira, critica mediale e narrativa distopica, costituendo un modo autoreferenziale per riflettere sulle conseguenze etiche, sociali e psicologiche che potrebbero derivare del progresso tecnologico. In tale contesto, si inseriscono anche riflessioni legate al transumanesimo e al postumano, teorie che indagano i limiti e le potenzialità dell’essere umano ridefinendone così l’identità e la natura stessa. L’analisi si concentra inoltre su elementi narrativi e cinematografici come i personaggi, l’ambientazione, le colonne sonore, le scene salienti e i riferimenti nascosti, chiamati Easter Eggs, che creano un legame tra episodi indipendenti. Si esamina inoltre come in questa selezione di episodi, Black Mirror, attraverso scenari futuri e verosimili, sfuma i confini tra dicotomie universali, ad esempio: utopia e distopia, realtà e finzione, libertà e controllo, connessione e isolamento, vita e morte, temporaneo ed eterno, presente e futuro. Attraverso la distopia e tali combinazioni, la serie riesce a suscitare nello spettatore un senso d’inquietudine e smarrimento ma anche curiosità e d’identificazione con i personaggi. In questo modo, la serie non solo intrattiene, ma stimola riflessioni autocritiche sul ruolo della tecnologia nella vita quotidiana reale e sulle conseguenze etiche del progresso scientifico e digitale.
