The Giampietri brothers fell during the First World War, and their story is a rare example of a tragic fate. Still, it is probably too similar to other mournful stories experienced by many families. Some of them might have been slightly less tragic in terms of the number of losses for each family, but they are without doubt just as significant. During the Great War, for the first time, the civilian population was massively involved. It affected the way families were traditionally organised and kept together, and caused major consequences on a social and economic level. How did people reorganise their households? How did they change the rural world and work? Since the four Giampietri brothers were sharecroppers, their story provides a starting point for an analysis of the rural context in the area of Reggio Emilia between approximately 1910 and 1920. This paper aims to outline the life of peasants at that time as precisely as possible through the analysis of handbooks, periodicals and newspapers. Amid fights, unions and new horizons, we will proceed from the general to the specific, from the Italian to the local situation, with particular attention paid to the area of Albinea, whenever possible.

Abstract
Four brothers who lost their lives during the Great War. Four small stories of a family who lived in Albinea, a small town in the Italian province of Reggio Emilia, that not only were intersected with the great History, but also contributed to writing it. Amid fights, unions and new horizons, we will proceed from the general to the specific, from the Italian to the local situation, with particular attention paid to the area of Albinea, whenever possible.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
