Reggio Emilia, renowned for its cultural heritage and innovative educational philosophy, faces the challenge of transforming its rich historical and cultural assets into a dynamic driver of economic growth and global branding. This thesis explores strategies to enhance economic outcomes, strengthen the city's brand identity, and leverage cultural heritage tourism as a sustainable development tool. By integrating interdisciplinary frameworks, including urban planning, marketing, and cultural management, this study identifies key opportunities and challenges in aligning local heritage preservation with contemporary tourism trends. As part of the research methodology, a random survey was conducted to capture the opinions of Reggio Emilia’s residents on the current state of tourism and their suggestions for its improvement. The survey results provide valuable insights into community attitudes toward tourism development, highlighting priorities such as promoting local gastronomy, enhancing infrastructure, and preserving cultural landmarks. The data underscores the importance of incorporating local voices in shaping a tourism strategy that reflects the city’s identity and values. Through a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews with stakeholders, quantitative analysis of tourism data, and the survey findings, the research investigates the role of cultural events, gastronomy, and art in shaping the city's appeal to international and domestic audiences. Particular attention is given to innovative branding strategies that highlight Reggio Emilia's uniqueness, such as its UNESCO-recognized educational practices and the authentic charm of its historical sites and food traditions. The study also examines how digital technologies, including virtual tours and social media campaigns, can amplify the city's global visibility while fostering deeper engagement with its cultural narrative. The findings reveal that a cohesive strategy integrating economic policy, sustainable tourism practices, and cultural promotion can significantly enhance Reggio Emilia's position as a destination of choice. Recommendations include fostering partnerships between local businesses, cultural institutions, and international networks; creating immersive tourist experiences; and emphasizing sustainable practices to balance tourism growth with cultural preservation. This thesis contributes to the discourse on urban and rural tourism development and offers a replicable model for mid-sized cities aiming to harmonize economic ambitions with the celebration of cultural heritage.
