From the beginning, cinema has established itself as a form of entertainment for people of all ages, as it encompasses both animated films and more dramatic movies that recount real-life events. Indeed, every country has a story to tell, and in recent decades a number of film directors have sought to portray their own version of it. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyse the themes and the ability to adapt the violent reality of the Argentine civic-military dictatorship (1976-1983) for the screen. To this end, six films linked to this period are analysed (three Argentine productions and three international co-productions). The study aims to raise the reader’s awareness of a reality that is rarely discussed in Italy and to encourage further academic research. In the first place, the investigation focuses on the situation in the Southern Cone during the 1970s, discussing the political and social context in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. Next, the analysis shifts to the emergence and development of the so-called “National Reorganization Process” in Argentina, detailing the economic and educational policies. It also provides information on the return to democracy and the importance of the “Nunca Más” report in the country. For what concerns the film selection, the analysis begins with Argentine productions, namely: The Official Story (1985), Night of the Pencils (1986) and Argentina, 1985 (2022). Finally, three international co-productions are taken into consideration: Olympic Garage (1999), Kamchatka (2002) and Clandestine Childhood (2011). Although all the stories are set during the civic-military dictatorship, each one offers a different perspective, thereby providing a comprehensive and varied analysis of that period.

Abstract
Although all the stories are set during the civic-military dictatorship, each one offers a different perspective, thereby providing a comprehensive and varied analysis of that period.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
