This thesis work stems from an internship carried out at the HEATECH Industrial Technical Physics Laboratory of the Reggio Emilia Technopole (Department of Engineering Sciences and Methods). The aim of the study is the analysis and modelling of the industrial heat-sealing process between thermoplastic film and inserts (spouts), used in automated packaging lines for filling detergents into single-use pouches in the Spouted Doypack format. This work is part of a research project commissioned by Ilapak S.p.A., a division of I.M.A. S.p.A., with the objective of improving the understanding of the phenomena characterising the different stages of the heat-sealing process and enhancing the control of its operating parameters. Particular attention was devoted to selected monomaterial polyethylene combinations, introduced to improve the recyclability of packaging, but which exhibit critical issues in terms of seal integrity and a reduced operating window. Following a preliminary characterisation of the components and materials using CAD tools, optical microscopy observations, and thermal analyses, a numerical model based on CFD methodologies was developed to investigate the heat transfer phenomena occurring during the process. The simulations made it possible to analyse the temperature distribution and thermal gradients within the joint, assessing the influence of the main operating parameters, such as sealing time and sealing temperature, on the quality of the joint. The results provide useful insights for a better understanding of the process and for the optimisation of the operating conditions.
