Recovering today the original bond of the person and of society with the natural world, understood as an ancestral and constitutive dimension of human experience as well, is a necessity calling for a specific (re-)configuration of the ecological, in its cognitive, psychological, affective and educational implications. The contemporary cultural context reveals the unsustainability of imposing on human beings accelerated rhythms, continuous stimulation and models of comparison that set the exasperation of doing and producing against the capacity to pause, to recognise and to co-regulate the being of the self and one’s own emotions. What is required, as Thomas Berry has argued, is to overcome the deleterious anthropocentrism of the Anthropocene, “ferrying” it into the Ecozoic Era. This dissertation offers a focused account of the origins and development of ecopedagogy, retracing its principal stages and the authors who defined its history, its founding values and its prospects. The analysis situates the declension of the Anthropocene — the epoch in which human action has driven the transformation of the Earth’s ecosystem in mistakenly anthropocentric terms, and has contributed in no small measure to the present climate and ecological crisis, with the attendant consequences of environmental degradation and of mistrust towards institutions — within the terms of the Ecozoic Era, in which the history of the universe and the history of humanity recognise themselves in a constitutive relation that determines their theoretical and practical possibility of evolution, balance, harmony, development and future. Particular attention is devoted to outdoor education, which recognises in direct experience and in the coordination of hand, mind and heart privileged conditions for children’s learning. Agricura, which is (also) an ecopedagogy and takes the outdoor environment as an open-air classroom and as a place of care, is examined in its application — currently being elaborated — to the animal world: the twenty-six activities that compose it were formulated in a holistic sense and have so far been applied principally to the plant world, whereas the relationship with animals opens an educational field that this work seeks to help describe in its own incipient terms. The historical-cultural research concludes by outlining the principal epistemological and experimental features required to prepare the comparative study — necessarily and desirably to be carried out elsewhere — of two experimental rural undertakings of significant social impact, Fattoria Giotto and Terra Mia Geminiana, which applies the method of agricura. Its documentary sources are two interviews with the women responsible for the two experiences, the documentation produced by the two settings, and the regional registers of educational and social farms. The historical-cultural position on the pedagogical-experimental approaches from which the first setting was observed in the light of the second is set out at the opening of the third chapter. What results is the proposal — itself in the form of a hypothesis, in the awareness that an acknowledged sense of limit is a condition of possibility that contributes positively to the effectiveness of the study of its object — of four transversal methodological criteria for recognising the educational character of an agricultural activity, applied to the activities actually carried out in the two settings. It also establishes the pertinence and fruitfulness of continuing to implement, in the terms outlined here, the interaction between an ecopedagogy already grounded and practised, such as that of Terra Mia Geminiana, and a possible ecopedagogy, present at Fattoria Giotto as a recognisable potential to be brought to its fullest unfolding.

Abstract
It also establishes the pertinence and fruitfulness of continuing to implement, in the terms outlined here, the interaction between an ecopedagogy already grounded and practised, such as that of Terra Mia Geminiana, and a possible ecopedagogy, present at Fattoria Giotto as a recognisable potential to be brought to its fullest unfolding.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
